Working Class Movement Library needs your help!

Monday, September 5th, 2011

The Working Class Movement Library needs your help:

Reduced financial support from Salford Council means that we need to raise £80,000 this year (and every year) to keep the Library running.

This vast and unique collection tells the compelling story of working people’s campaigns for radical social and political change over the past 200 years.  Thanks to our hugely successful Heritage Lottery Fund project to make the Library more open and accessible, the number of people visiting us has gone up more than fivefold in three years, and our volunteer team figures are at an all-time high.

You can donate here.

They have a fantastic blog, and you can follow them on twitter too.

Create your own gallery display in the Tate

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

I’ve just discovered this lovely interactive game on the Tate Twitter feed. You could use this in class with art groups. It gives a good insight into the four essential roles required when putting on a new exhibition and you learn facts about the artists too. Why not have a go yourself?

The 100 most beautiful words in English (apparently)

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Saw this link on Twitter and thought it was quite interesting. It is American though, so the definition of a bungalow as being ” A small, cozy cottage” is not, I imagine, how most English people would describe one.

Here’s the link

How I wrote this song…

Monday, July 25th, 2011

The Guardian online has a fascinating collection of musicians talking about how they wrote a particular song, followed by acoustic renditions of the song itself. Fabulous stuff.

Michelle’s skydive

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

She’s wild, she’s daring, she’s a little bit Wicked! She’s also utterly bonkers to jump out of a plane wearing a padded shell-suit and attached to a complete stranger called Big Les. Still, at least she landed on her feet (as always). What a (falling) star!

Michelle’s skydive was in aid of the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust.

Bjork’s beautiful Biophilia

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

On Sunday, we went to see Bjork’s international debut concert Biophilia, at MOSI. It was utterly, completely, totally, absolutely amazing! Bjork mixes new technology with music and nature. I loved every second and after two fabulous hours we stepped out into the sunshine buzzing with huge smiles on our faces. She sang some of my favourites from Vespertine: Hidden Place, It’s Not Up To You and Unison as well as lots of new tracks from the forthcoming Biophilia apps. You can read more about Bjork’s concept for Biophilia here. By sheer fluke, we managed to stand in the BEST POSITION in the whole hanger. So if you’re going to see Bjork get there early and dash to the vantage point of the photo above. Head for the raised platform near the VIP area and stand on the third step. You will then be on Bjork’s eye level and about ten feet away from her. She’s gorgeous. I think everyone on the room was a little bit in love with her, huge orange afro and all.

Here’s a YouTube clip of her talking about televisions. Could this be the reason why I don’t have a telly?

And here she is in my favourite video of her singing Big Time Sensuality
